Since 2001, Hope Hoffman has worked full-time as a freelance performer, teacher and writer of dance, music and theater. She graduated in 1998 with a B.A. in creative writing and journalism, and began working as a teacher, writer and modern/classical dancer in 1999. She is currently presenting lively and inventive performances of original New England fiddle tunes and the traditional Maine music which inspires them. With her fiddle, viola, guitar and voice, Hope shares a rhythmic and lyrical repertoire including Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton, French Canadian, Welsh and Scandinavian tunes. Hope's collection of original fiddle tunes was written while living in Maine surrounded by a community of farmers, artists and other independent-minded people, exploring and appreciating the varied landscape and unique personality of Maine. Hope debuted her original tunes on fiddle and viola at Johnny D's club in Somerville, MA, and continues to give formal and informal performances from Presque Isle to Manhattan. Known for her warm and personable performances, Hope Hoffman has been a professional musician in Maine for several years, providing imaginative charm and good old-fashioned fun to dozens of downtown festivals, restaurants, weddings, and community gatherings. With a musical style is noted for its evocative beauty and rough-and-tumble playfulness, Hope plays for contra dances, as well as solo fiddle for barn dances, and also leads sessions for children's museums and festivals featuring fiddle music, creative movement and folk dance. She is the founder and director of the Town Hall Theater Group, presenting original theater, dance and clowning shows with traditional live music, and hosting potlucks promoting local farm foods. Since 2002 the group has given 34 performances of 14 original shows, written and performed by Hope and the company, in grange halls and other intimate venues throughout Maine. Hope has been presenting her choreography since 1993, and performing dance since 1980, studying with the Boston Ballet and The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago, and attending master classes at Jacob's Pillow. Hope has presented new choreography sponsored by the New Dance Studio in Portland, Maine, and often performed with this modern dance group. Previously, she performed and choreographed with the Windfall Dance Company in Indiana, where she served as an instructor, producer and artistic director. She also assisted in a stage adaptation of Dylan Thomas' Under Milk Wood, and directed a multimedia performance series. Hope has frequently toured the US and UK choreographing and modeling for visual artists. She graduated with honors from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1998, and holds a B.A. in writing, a minor in dance, and a minor in cultural studies. Her experience with children includes leading a summer dance camp, and teaching dance and theater classes at schools in Maine. She also created and lead dance activities for a literacy project and as Assistant Teacher at a Montessori preschool. She has been teaching dance and music workshops, theater classes, and private and group fiddle lessons in Maine since 2002. |
